DON'T THEY LOOK GOOD!!

The President of Lyndhurst Bowls Club, John Howell, invited Robert and a guest to his club's President's Day held on Wednesday 10 July.

Robert invited Mike Allington to join him as they are the smartest VBC bowlers, so they say?

They were teamed up with two Brockenhurst members also invited to the Lyndhurst BC President's Day and went on to prove how smart they really are by winning the top rink of the day.

Well done Robert and Mike, not just dapper smart but proving they are smart bowlers too, you did our club proud!!

NEW NHS APP
lawn bowls, verwood, dorset, social club, clubhouse

Hello Folks

For those off you with smart phones this could be a very useful free app from the NHS.

I went to the Dorset NHS clinical planning group AGM yesterday and came across this great app which could save a lot of worry or delay when an accident or injury may not be life threatening, but does need medical attention.

Instead of everyone rushing straight to A&E this apps shows us alternatives in E Dorset, opening times, facilities, how long to drive there and approx wait times.

You might like to try it for yourself to see when Wimborne, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Poole and Blandford hospitals as well as other locations are open for business. Gradually clinics will be added too, as a way of reducing overload at A&E departments.

If you'd like me to show you how it works on my phone, or install it for you on yours - just ask!

Vanessa

REG HURFORD TROPHY

Reg Hurford Trophy - Saturday 29 June

It was a seering hot day for the Reg Hurford 2 - wood Singles competition held on Saturday 29 June and cooling wet scarves were the order of the day, demonstrated here by Gill Bassett!

Mike Allington had come up early to give the green a close cut which proved perfect for bowling - thank you Mike!

A reduced number of entries meant that 9 people played everyone else and when you were the one "resting", you were in fact lining up the mat and jacks for the four rinks playing! There were 3 ends against each opponent, making 24 in all before lunch, with a coffee break in between.

Lunch was a tasty "bring and share" selection enjoyed by all, before Barry announced the finalists.

Both Hilary Walker and Ken Haxby-Thompson scored 19, but Angela Daymond and Jim Scutt played the final having scored 20 and 22 respectively, Jim being the ultimate winner after a 6-end final.

But, boy, was it hot!! Competition Secretary, Barry Chick presented the trophies.

CAPTAINS' DAY

Our Captains' Day - Saturday 6 July

It was another hot day for our Captains' Day and everyone was invited to wear lovely bright coloured shirts. There was fun and laughter on the green as each team played the novelty games with targets and provided a hilarious cabaret for the watching visitors.

There was such a spread of sandwiches and delicious homemade cakes that no one went home hungry and some took extras home for later. Trays of sandwiches were purchased from Morrisons and members donated generously with cakes and raffle prizes, with the result that £100 was made for Club funds.

Full size photos are now available on Flickr via our Photo Gallery page.

Well done those who helped organise and prepare everything for the day, and thanks to those who joined in to make this event a very enjoyable day for our Captains'!

lawn bowls, verwood, dorset, social club, clubhouse

Saturday 20 July - new date for the Friendly v Crofton Bowling Club (AWAY)

After a request from Crofton club to change the date, with thanks to Pat and Mike, we have been able to swap the Crofton Friendly match to Saturday 20 July.

My apologies to anyone who is now unable to come with us on July 20. Though I hope that others will now be able to join us.

To ensure that this be a relaxed and enjoyable day, a coach has been booked to take us to Crofton at a nominal cost of £10 per person. The Management Committee have agreed that the club will subsidise the total cost of the coach for members travelling.

  • Proposed plan for the day:-
  • 12.30 - Meet the coach at the Helix car park, near VBC clubhouse
  • 13.45 - eta at Crofton BC, Fareham, PO14
  • 14.30 - Friendly match 4 teams of Mixed Rinks
  • 17.30 - Tea with Crofton members
  • 18.30 - Return to Verwood

A list is in the clubhouse and on the website Friendlies page so please do sign up for this fun, sociable event. Crofton is a large, friendly club whose members offer a warm welcome and a generous tea after the match. Social Members are also welcome to come along with us to enjoy the afternoon.
